Roofing – Opinion

Roofing a geodesic dome is a pain.

It takes a lot of planning and attention to detail to get right. It’s not something you will want to do twice and for that reason alone it makes sense to use the longest lasting roof type: Metal.

There are many metal roof types, but the best ones (for longevity and beauty) are coated aluminum shingles. They come in many types, but realistically there are only two best choices when it comes to roofing the Mini Dome:

  • Option #1: Per these instructions, plans, and drawings: Install the exact same make/model/manufacture (see Bill of Materials). That would save many weeks of planning time because the provided roofing drawings would be 100% applicable.
  • Option #2: Install Reinke Shakes. They have exposed fasteners, a more involved underlayment process, a very particular look, but they can be installed on the fly, without needing to plan every single cut.

I’m not sure which of these two is the better option, but you can’t go wrong with either.
