In-Wall – Overview

It’s time to install the following in-wall systems:

  • Window blocking
  • Upper floor support column
  • Upper floor steel brackets
  • Vent pipes
  • Door wall
  • HRV ducts

As well as:

  • Re-torque all connections*
  • Apply a wood treatment

*Keep the space warm and dry for weeks to ensure the lumber dries completely in order to perform a final re-torquing of all connections.

A note on non-metallic ducting for an HRV: ABS pipe may or may not meet fire safety standards for ducting. If not, it may still be acceptable for use if encased in insulation that meets the required flame and smoke ratings (ASTM E 84). Always consult your local inspector if you have concerns.

Metallic ducting is also an option but may be more prone to condensation issues.

Expect to spend ~3 weeks doing the work outlined in this chapter.
