Black and white drawing of a five-finger hub weldment for Dodeca Domes, emphasizing the complexity that is involved in manufacturing them.

The Secret Sauce

It looks complicated, because it is: By putting all of the dihedral angles and attachment points into the steel hubs, it allows the wooden struts, studs, and panels of the dome to be greatly simplified.

Steel is a more dimensionally stable material than wood, so it's a better material for holding tight tolerances. Tolerances which are easily repeatable with CNC cutting and steel jig welding.

These hubs are the backbone of the dome, rock-solid and ideally suited for guiding and securing the rest of the structure into perfect alignment.
