Roofing – Overview

This is the most time consuming and critical part of the build.

Get it right and life is good. Get it wrong, and you just joined the many hippies and contractors that gave domes a leaky reputation.

The key to correctly roofing a geodesic dome is to have a foolproof and detailed plan based on the following:

• Water typically moves downward.
• Sealants should not be trusted.
• Every planar surface is its own roof.
• Each roof must overlap / underlap.
• Every penetration must be flashed.

Given the time commitment required, and the rarity of geodesic domes, it is unlikely a roofing contractor will be willing, or should be blindly trusted to quote this job.

Expect to do this yourself.

Expect to spend ~3 months doing the work outlined in this chapter.
