A close-up view of a stack of prefabricated geodesic dome parts.

Prefab – Overview

The majority of the Mini Dome parts can be fabricated and stored in a small shop or garage while awaiting permit approval.

Purchase lumber early to allow time for drying.

Dry lumber is more dimensionally stable and easier to work with. Even kiln-dried lumber contains moisture and benefits from further drying.

Stack and space the lumber in a climate controlled environment. It will lose a significant amount of its moisture content within just a few weeks.

To track drying progress, mark the starting weight of a piece of lumber and compare over time.

Once the lumber is dry, it’s time to construct the following components:

  • Struts
  • Panels
  • Floor
  • Room
  • Rebar

Expect to spend ~2 months doing the work outlined in this chapter.
