Drywall – Overview

It’s time to start covering the bathroom walls with drywall, which involves the following:

  • Installing blocking
  • Hanging the bathroom door
  • Installing plywood panels
  • Cutting and hanging the drywall
  • Applying and smoothing multiple coats of drywall mud
  • Priming the walls

Drywall was chosen for the bathroom wall covering because it is more moisture resistant than wood paneling and provides a clean, sterile appearance when finished.

Working with drywall mud to make inside corners seamless is tricky. It is worth doing in a bathroom because a monolithic coat of paint on the walls provides significant moisture resistance. However, if drywall is used on the rest of the walls, wooden trim is better suited for inside corners, as it simplifies finishing and accommodates minor structural movement without cracking.

Expect to spend ~3 weeks doing the work outlined in this chapter.
