Soft Insulation – Overview

It’s time to install the soft insulation in the walls.

Mineral wool is the best option due to its sound-deadening qualities. While the previously applied spray foam insulation is an excellent insulator and vapor block, it does little to block sound.

That said, due to previously applied closed-cell spray foam, any soft insulation can be used in this chapter without compromising the longevity of the wall assembly.

Mineral wool has many benefits:

  • Excellent sound absorption
  • Good insulator (~R4.2 per inch)
  • Fire resistant
  • Moisture repellant
  • Easy to cut and shape

Even though it’s less irritating than fiberglass, it’s still important to wear gloves, a respirator, and safety glasses when handling mineral wool, as it can cause irritation and may release small sharp shards.

Expect to spend ~3 days doing the work outlined in this chapter.
