A close-up view of welding the Mini Dome custom steel railing.

Metalwork – Overview

It’s time to fabricate the custom railings and window buck trim.

This is an optional step. There are many off-the-shelf solutions, but making the custom parts in this chapter involves the following:

  • Cutting metal pieces
  • Welding them together
  • Grinding the welds smooth
  • Having them powder coated

A black powder coat was chosen for emphasis and class. It contrasts with the light walls and matches future furniture.

The railings are a key focal point in the dome. They benefit from being as robust and impressive as possible. The balusters were angled to match the intersecting wood paneling, but they could have been fabricated as vertical bars to simplify the design.

The otherwise impressive windows were muted by the busyness of the wood paneling, so they benefited from a high-contrast window buck trim to match the railings.

Expect to spend ~4 weeks doing the work outlined in this chapter.
