Wood Paneling – Overview

It’s time to panel the walls and window boxes with wood, which involves the following:

  • Sorting planks
  • Creating a cutting jig
  • Cutting panels
  • Marking screw locations
  • Applying a wood finish
  • Installing panels

1x8 tongue and groove knotty pine was chosen for the paneling because it is relatively inexpensive compared to other woods but still more visually interesting than drywall. It provides a warm, homely, cabin-like appearance when finished.

Drywall with wooden trim is a viable alternative to wood paneling. It is less expensive and offers a more traditional wall appearance.

There are many wood types, profiles, and finishing options. Tongue and groove is the strongest and least warp-prone profile. For finishing, it is tempting to use stain, but staining knotty pine often looks tacky. A natural-looking finish is better suited to complement the characteristics of each wood type.

Expect to spend ~5 weeks doing the work outlined in this chapter.
